Job Summary

MICDS is looking for a dynamic music educator to teach the advanced orchestral chamber ensemble (Virtuosi) class in our Upper School. The ideal candidate will have a strong set of musicianship skills including Strong foundational strings method knowledge, teaching experience for both lower and upper string instruments and experience leading student orchestras.

Teaching our Virtuosi includes being a central member of the teaching team for a thriving strings/orchestra program. This position involves working in close collaboration with the Orchestra Director and the extended day Strings teacher to help develop and deepen a vibrant and meaningful orchestra program. The class meets three days a week (once on either Monday or Tuesday for 90 minutes, once on Wednesday for 45 minutes, and then once again on Thursday or Friday for 90 minutes). Helping students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned musical experiences, classroom lessons, and performances will be a part of the yearly schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Works with the department chair to plan, document, evaluate, and revise curriculum, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.

  • Prepare course materials including syllabus, assignments, and Canvas page that fit into the framework of a one-to-one laptop environment.

  • Teach one class in the Arts Department

  • Partner and collaborate with the Arts Department in creating and delivering a robust curriculum that supports and enhances our Arts program.

  • Participates in the MICDS professional development framework and pursues outside opportunities to stay current with best practices and maintain expertise in subject matter.

  • Communicates student progress consistently with parents and guardians.

  • Collaborate effectively with the departmental team, student support service personnel, and colleagues.

  • Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the School’s discretion.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Music or Music Education required and Masters preferred.

  • 2+ years experience teaching orchestral ensemble classes.

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse and inclusive curriculum.

  • Ability to work in an environment that embraces a diverse community of students, educators, parents, and alums.

  • Experience Working in a one-to-one laptop environment or relevant technology skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong music literacy.

  • Must enjoy working and learning with children.

Other Information

  • A criminal history and background check is required and must be successfully completed prior to employment.

  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.

  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom, theater and theater shop environment.

  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
